Bayrische StaatsBibliothek – Department of Manuscripts and Early Printed Books

The library soon opened up to the renewal of the book culture proceeding from England in the late 19th century, by setting up the subject field "libri selecti". From this time on, also products of German hand presses, as well as books illustrated with original graphic art and limited editions, were taken up by this subject field. In the 1970s the acquisition programme was expanded to also encompass experimental artists' books.

From 1958 on, the now more than 11,000 prints of modern bibliophily were complemented by the great French painters' book of the 20th century, followed by other European and American editions. The representative collection currently comprises 650 volumes encompassing all important art styles and artists. The gaps concerning the German book artistry from Klinger to Beckmann could also be closed. Moreover, the collection policy takes account of the latest developments since the American and British pop art.
