Opening on thursday, 8 July 2010, 7pm

The work of California concept artist Allen Ruppersberg revolves around speech fragments of everyday life and of poetry. Literature – indeed, language in general – plays an important role for the artist, who was born in Cleveland in 1944. For example, literary models frequently served as inspiration for his early works and projects, which are also mirrored in his artist’s books. Among his legendary works are Al’s Grand Hotel (1971). Here Ruppersberg realized a temporary hotel in which seven individually furnished rooms could be rented, among them a “Jesus Room” and a “Wedding Room”. For this work he took his inspiration from Vicki Baum’s novel Menschen im Hotel, which was adapted to film for a 1932 production called Grand Hotel, starring Greta Garbo.

The exhibition at the Research Centre presents a small retrospective of Allen Ruppersberg’s artist’s books, enhanced by magazines and posters. Nearly all of his book art works are included, from his very first, dating from 1969, to his most recent. In addition to independent artist’s books, Rupperberg’s extensive artistic contributions to numerous publications will also be on view.
